The EQ-5D is a widely used, generic, preference-based instrument for measuring health-related quality of life, describing health across five dimensions, mobility, self-care, usual activities, pain or discomfort, and anxiety or depression, each at several levels. Responses define a health state that can be converted into a single index value using a value set derived from general-population preferences, anchored so that full health is one and states equivalent to being dead are zero, with some states valued as worse than dead. This index provides the quality weights used to calculate quality-adjusted life years, which is why the EQ-5D is the measure preferred by NICE for cost-utility analysis. Its brevity and extensive validation make it practical to administer in trials and routine care, though its sensitivity in particular conditions is sometimes debated.
