The number needed to treat is the number of patients who would have to receive an intervention, rather than the comparator, for one additional patient to benefit, and it is calculated as the reciprocal of the absolute risk reduction. It provides an intuitive, clinically meaningful expression of the effort required to achieve a benefit, and it depends on the baseline risk, so the same relative effect yields a smaller number needed to treat, and thus greater value, where the underlying risk is higher. A corresponding number needed to harm can be calculated for adverse effects, allowing benefits and harms to be weighed. Because it conveys the practical scale of benefit, it is a useful aid to communicating a technology's effect to clinicians and decision makers.
